It's a beautiful FULL moon tonight!

Taken tonight by goingslo at Flickr.com

Goingslo writes "Starlings Gathering For Their Evening Roost...I was headed for home on California's famously scenic Highway One when I noticed this vision out of the corner of my eye. After coming to a quick stop and backing down the highway, I was able to snap this shot. No one even honked or offered a rude gesture. Oh, the things one can get away with while driving a Volkswagen camper van!
I watched the birds for a moment until they lifted off in unison and flew away."

This photo was taken tonight from South America.

Tonight a friend of mine pointed out that this is a Hunter's moon, "also known as blood moon or sanguine moon", which is "the first full moon after the harvest moon, which is the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox." It is so called because it "is ideal for hunters shooting migrating birds in Northern Europe. The name is also said to have been used by Native Americans as they tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead."
